Funny you should say this, because that's what wavetable synthesis is
all about. PPG, Waldorf microWave and WAVE, Prophet VS, Wavestation,
FIZMO and others are all based on that principle - the implementation
varies of course. Wavetable synthesis is one answer to the Fourier
resynthesis problem of having too many parameters to play with. It
removes some of the parameters entirely (for instance phase) and it
helps with the question of "how do I get from _this_ sound to _that_
sound" - the answer is of course "put _this_ and _that_ on two ends of
a wavetable and interpolate between the two".

The other answer is the Hartmann Neuron, which is really "we're hiding
all the parameters from you, but we give you some joysticks to stir
around in the parameter soup".

Waldorf had done both of these things, just not on the same synthesizer.
The user interface of the WAVE works really well even for creating new
waves, but the ASIC inside it interpolates only integer positions
between waves in the table. The wavetable oscillator in the Q series
has infinitely smooth interpolation, but you can't alter the waves or
the wavetables. All the Wave series synthesizers have free-form
envelopes for the wave modulation and extensive trigger sources and
modulation capabilities. BTW, I have a reference sheet for the ROM
waves and their spectra here:
