Given some motivation I can find the magazine artical ( I think it was
Nuts&Volts about 2 years ago ) but they had an article on building a VLF
receiver for listening to atmospheric noises ( tweaks, whistlers and whatnot
) which can be pretty interesting to listen to. I used to work the 160meter
band, you can record some downright interesting stuff on there too.

You might want to visit a ham fest and pick up an old General Purpose
reciever, usually you can find one of the Radio Shack DX transisorized
recievers. Nice thing is they'll run off 12volts so you can drive into the
middle of no-where where you can run a few hundred feet of wire and actually
hear more then your computer not that your computer isnt an interesting
source of noises unto itself.

Just building or modifying an AM receiver is an awefully limited noise
source.
