AHA!! Something I actually KNOW!!

1/4-40NEF breaks down into

1/4" = basic thread size
40 = Threads per Inch
NEF = National Extra Fine (modern standards actually call this a UNEF)


The UNEF part is a bit redundant since 40 threads per inch HAS to be the
extra fine thread pitch. 20 is coarse (UNC or Unified National Coarse), 28
is fine (UNF). You could ask for a 1/4-40 panel nut and get the right thing.
Still, most call outs will include the UNEF designator just to be 100% sure.
