It's a while since I saw it, but my belief is that there is only one kind of
encoder, the problem is that putting a large knob on it means that
although it is easier to turn, it is easier to break off , the big knob
being a
larger target & allowing more leverage about the shaft.

It's possible to buy larger & more robust & expensive encoders, but not to
fit in
the space where the original one is.
