I wouldn't think that acetone would be too terribly kind to the plastic 
shafts.

If I were dealing with a mixer it would be a read drag in any case,  but at 
this point I have (somewhere in storage) an empty mixer case that I thought 
might be useful at some point,  and a coffee can or so full of pots,  some of 
which won't turn at all.

Hot water?  Hmm.  I'll put that on my list of things to try.
