Another option for an embeddable OS would be QNX.  It looks
kind of like Unix/Linux in terms of the shell and system calls, but
it's much more lightweight, and you can tailor out parts of the OS
that you don't need for a given application.  It's at:

It's not free, but it's a lot cheaper than VxWorks, and you can get
a 30-day free evaluation copy.  I used an older version on a space
payload project with good success a few years ago.
