Well, since there are four binary settings, you have 16:1 odds for making it
work the first time ;-)
Most probable is clock phase errors. I never get those right the first time.
We'll see cause i'm setting up a microchip DAC on the PIC18 SSP port soon...
Let's compare settings!

Well.. I got this working.. not as i would have liked to.. but it is
working.. i found the application note on their site for SPI to their
digital potentiometers via a pic16f877.. which is a diff processor then i'm
using, but most of the code is the same.. after making the appropriate
changes to the code (registers n such), i loaded it up, and have been
hacking at it all day.. then i ran across another sample code in there..
for firmware implementation.. so that what i tried.. works like a charm..
any ideas why my hardware SPI port never worked tho?

Not a lot of info here Bill.
Do you have any indication that any of the program that you
put in the unit is working (ie does the hardware work)?
Did you program the MSSP and clocks correctly for SPI?
You have to get the MSSP port programmed correctly before
anything will happen.
Good luck!
