Thanks everyone!

I appreciate everyone's thoughtful feedback. Thanks. I have a lot to chew on 
regarding this.
But I'm going to goof around with it.

Harry's thought about the surface reflectivity is true enough. What if I 
used a really flat finish and a very
fine grained gradient as suggested by John?

Ian's thought about the stable initial position makes me think I need to 
come up with some sort of
stable mechanical detente at the initial postion. I think I will combine 
this with electronics that have a sort
of threshold. The circuit only responds after a minimum movement.
Making this unnoticeable will challenging.

Thanks Ian and Mark for the info regarding the wind controller and the 
Buchla joystick design.

This thing might actually work!
