I like the idea. It will be important to print a really smooth gradient so
that the reflected light level changes smoothly. That probably won't be a
big problem, given the high quality of modern printers. For premium quality,
try a Linotronic or something; anybody here work at an imaging service
bureau?
I just thought of a potential maintenance issue: The paper (with the
grayscale image on it) will yellow with age. Nothing that some trimmers
couldn't handle, I guess. But speaking of using a Lino, you could output to
film instead of paper. You'd need something reflective behind the clear
film -- something white or metallic that won't darken much with age.
While this has nothing to do with the optical stuff, I'd like to point out
that a mod wheel really only needs one spring:
