[sdiy] Seeing up close (was:Spice vs Real World)

Hi James and others,
I recently did myself a HUGE favor and went out and bought a pair of
"reading / magnifying" glasses at the local pharmacy. These are just simple
magnifiers, but they come in frames like standard reading glases and are
available in strengths from 1.25 up to 3.75. I spent a whole $13 and bought
a pair of the 1.75 in a nice, comfortable frame (even has the spring loaded
hinges so they can flex outward a little bit).
Long story short: I CAN SEE AGAIN!!!!! I had grown SO tired of futzing about
with a hand held magnifying glass or a table top magnifier/lamp. Now I just
put my glasses on and I can actually SEE what I'm doing. I can read part
markings and everything. Of course, you still need to make sure your work
area has decent lighting, and the table top mag/lamp still gets used every
once in a while, but these simple, cheap glasses I bought were a Godsend.
Now I know I should go out and get some "REAL" glasses some day soon, but my
vision is perfect for anything beyond two or three feet. I only use the mag
glasses when reading or doing electronics work. Without the glasses, I can
read road signs better than my 13 year old son, but it's nice to be able to
read the Digi-Key and Mouser catalogs without having to hold a magnifying
glass in from of me! And to think these glasses were recommended to me by my
ex!
Cheers!
Tim (glassy-eyed and proud of it) Servo

Subject: [sdiy] Spice vs Real World
Hmmm....
About a week ago Don posted some links to some alternative
ladder
filter circuit patents. Well, I have built up one of them two ways. I
used spice (Linear Technologies Switcher Cad), and real parts. The
spice
simulation seems to work as expected...the real circuit does not....at
least, so far.
The one I am building is a two pole band pass circuit. It sure
looks reasonable. Most likely, I have an incorrect connection on my
breadboard (this is extremely likely, since I have already corrected 3
mistakes), so as soon as I get some time, I will rip it up, and start
over
again...sometimes that seems to work better than trying to figure out
what
is wrong. Not being able to see close up seems to be getting to be a
rather big pain in the .... eyes...
