Hi Richard,
The old-school rule of thumb is to use a 0.1uF on
every IC. The 0.1uF value is a carry over from the
7400 i.e. power hog days. With modern chips some folks
say 0.01uF is just fine. As for type of cap, I use AVX
mono, but in truth any type of cap will work.
These bypass caps keep the current glitches caused by
an IC local to that IC. These current spikes can
otherwise get out over the power and/or ground lines
and cause havoc with other ICs.
