I agree, and it makes me curious, aren't the transistors in an opamp still
transistors?  

What differences could there be between discrete parts and transistors and
diodes in an integrated circuit that can affect the sound of something like
a VCO?  

Unless using discrete parts makes (for example) a VCO with a sawtooth
waveform that has a faster reset time than any other design, I don't see the
value in a discrete only design.
