Yes, I tried this while I was breadboarding the original design.

I think I remember thinking it sounded a bit less smooth as you swept the
filter center freq.  But I can't remember for sure, and I certainly don't
have a good explanation why that would be.

Just curious, on the filter, have you tried running 
the LED's in series rather than parallel? (don't know if that would make anything easier or not)
