I had a very old circuit (I built it when I was, like, 11 or 12 years
old) that turned my TV into an oscilloscope. Presto, I remember now, it
was in 86... So I was 14 at the time. Anyway, it worked with a 555, a
741 and a BF494 as a RF oscillator. The TV needed no hack at all! The
circuit had a sort of an atenna to sync the 555 to the high voltage TV
oscillator, and generated an "interference" on the TV screen via the TV
antenna (it was quite a while ago, you know... I am pulling this from
memory. Actually I don't remember if I had to plug anything on the
antenna... don't really recall!). It was OK for audio - but the wave was
displayed from top to bottom, instead of left to right. And oh it was
quite some fun!
