But they didn't appear till about four years after MIDI did. And they were 
only necessary because there was a problem.

MIDI *could* have been a protocol where all you ever needed was a single 
line in each direction. Even in 1984 such a thing would have been possible. 
It would have been more expensive, but given the relative cost of a synth 
and the MIDI interface, I don't think it would have been impractically 
expensive. Especially given that anyone who ever used MIDI seriously ended 
up buying a multi-I/O interface anyway.
