I like the idea too.  Other options are optical or magnetic readout of key 
position.  "Leveling" (getting all the keys to respond the same) is the 
biggest problem.  Maybe the capacitive approach would have some advantage 
there.  Magnetic is probably the most sensitive technique because of the 
1/r^4 dependence, but linear Hall sensors are still fairly expensive.
