But isn't that the way it's done anyway since the early times of 
Expander and Unitor, since multitimbrality came up so that one 
instrument required 8-16 channels for itself, or since the age of Techno 
where you had so high tempi and so much modulation going on that you 
just must occupy all 16 channels of a MIDI line for a single instrument?
