The Holy Bible of Video:

Video Demystified, Fourth Edition by Keith Jack

Warning: this book is for *hardware people*. And it jumps right in (this is not 
'Video for Dummies'). But no other book has this much detail.

The 2nd and 3rd editions are just as useful for RGB stuff. The later edition 
covers stuff like MPEG-4 and HDTV and every video standard in the known 
universe.

Ignore the reviews on Amamzon.com, those people are obviously SW dweebs wanting 
to stream porn off their server :)
