A good book on how TV works would probably clarify this sort of thing in 
fairly short order...

I have a copy of "Basic Television" here by Bernard Grob (?),  which is pretty 
dated but the signals haven't changed any.  And won't,  until they get done 
shoving that digital TV crap down our throats.
