Joe,
It was the Mellotron that i remember intimidating the "union" back in Ohio
in the early '70's. You had to get dispensation to use it. In NE Ohio the
union was strong and you carried a card to work with an "agency" or play any
but the lowest biker dive.
regards,
p

God, does this date me! When synthesizers were first used here in
Hollyweird, Bernie Krause, as I recall, had to deal with hassles from the
musicians unions worried that the synthesizer would put working musicians
out of work, since they could theoretically sound like any instrument. There
was lots of fear floating around in the beginning that almost had the unions
demanding that no synths be used, ever. I don't think younger folks realize
now how threatening synthesizers were "in the old days."

Boston also had a note on at least one of their albums, which mentioned
that no synthesizers were used on the album. Except for trying to act like
a total snob, I don't really see a purpose for such a note. Why would they
feel a need to tell us what WASN'T used on the album? They might as well
have said no that no brown guitars were used on the album. So what? Who
cares?
Also, album credits are going to be very lengthy indeed, if bands start
listing all the gear that they *didn't* use on an album. ;)
Hey, why stop there? Why not include a list of people that you *don't* want
to thank for helping you create your album or further your career? Why not
take time out to list (and not thank) all the companies which *don't*
supply you with free gear? Finally, when you publish your tour schedule,
why not just list all the cities you *won't* be playing in?
:)
Glen
