  Well, we're talking early-to-mid 1970s, remember.  Guitarists were the 
de facto standard for solos and other spotlighted lead work.  With the 
staging of keyboard soloists, empowered by the lead synthesizer (and  
comprising rigs that looked impressive a la Emerson), the guitarists 
began to get scared that their sacred place on stage was getting 
usurped.  Perhaps this is why a number of guitar-based bands loudly 
proclaimed their records had no synthesizers (or needed them).

  Fear of a new technology, because it was changing the "accepted way of 
things," is what it was about.
Sort of like VST vs. hardwired synths today.
