[sdiy] MS10/20 vca's

I'm looking into building a couple of those single/two transistor vca's
from early Korg gear.

Some questions:

Is the transistor type critical? If so, what would be a good 2n-type
substitute?

All schematics I see the transistor is marked 'selected.' Selected for
what? Noise, resistance, hfe, sonic character?

Lastly, I've found single and two transistor versions. How much of an
effect does the second transistor have on performance?
