Flame ON! (torch, torch, burn, burn)...
No, actually I have to agree with you. "Pictures" only has a few good
minutes in it, and the rest is pretty much a throwaway. I was ready to
pretty much shoot the little 'chirping birds' after about sixty seconds. How
about "Snowflakes Are Dancing"? This is a MUCH simpler Tomita album, and not
as bombastic as "Firebird" or "Planets" (although you have to admit, it
would be pretty hard to do those albums and not have come out sounding "BIG"
considering the original material). "Snowflakes" has some absolutely
beautiful moments. I also think that's part of why I prefer Tomita, since he
did more of the later "romantic" period pieces.
And by the way, why has nobody ever tackled Aaron Copeland's works (besides
ELP), and what the heck ever happened to Kraft & Alexander (produced a
rather amazing synth "Nutcracker Suite" album and then fell off the face of
the Earth)? Okay, I'll shut up now.
