<snip>
I scrubbed just the solder side with a toothbrush and some rubbing
alcohol after that, and it's been fine and good looking ever since.

I would NOT recommend using rubbing alcohol as a PCB or contact cleaner.
What you want is Isopropyl alcohol (or IPA). Get some that has as little
water in it as possible. The problem with rubbing alcohol is that it has
lanolin in it (acts as a lubricant to make rubbing it in easier), and
lanolin will interfere with electrical contacts, and attract dirt and gunk
later. There are several commercial flux remover/cleaners available, and
most have IPA as their primary ingredient. And just in case anyone is
wondering, drinking these sorts of alcohol will tend to kill you or destroy
your eyesight. These are NOT the sort of alcohol one finds in 'sprits.'
Cheers!
