Also, the 'type' of noise is an issue.
Random white noise is far less noticeable or disturbing than
a fixed frequency whine from a power supply, or aliasing artifacts
from a/d conversion, or ring modulator carrier bleed through.
Looking at 'grass' on a scope gives an indication of the noise level,
but what is 'acceptable' comes from one's ears, as always.
