I'm with you on this one. I don't restrict myself in any way when it
comes to recording tracks, though. I don't think I'll ever buy a
completed module or even a kit, again. Even the pcbs I have are so
heavily modified that I think I'm better off simply building on perf
board.
As far as your last statement of adding a bit of the un-buyable to
your sound...Right on! Perhaps I've been reading to many AH posts but
if I read any more posts of "how do I exactly emulate (fill in the
blank, usually some form of vintage analog, and usually Moog, ARP, or
Roland) I think I'll breakdown in tears...or laughter. On that note,
here's a story:
A few months back I brought my modular synth to my friends studio for a
recording session. We record often but this was the first time I
brought my setup. My bandmates were somewhat dismayed at the looks
(it's probably one of the uglier modulars out there). After some hours
of recording both the bassist and the drummer commented on how much
louder/fuller/richer I sounded that night compared to the usual setup I
use. The "usual" setup is my friends vintage analog gear: Moog Prodigy
and Minimoog, ARP Oddy, Yamaha CS15.
