Designing stable references into your circuits is simply good engineering 
practice, just like proper bypassing is. If you are building a project for 
yourself, then who cares, do whatever you like with it. But if you are 
providing a product for others to DIY with, it makes sense to do the 
engineering properly, as you don't know exactly under what conditions your 
design will be used. Many, many problems can be avoided this way...
