These are nice - very grainy digital sound, but plenty of punch and presence.

The catch with these is that Emu's current incarnation is selling a sampler 
on a PC board for about $300, with all of the Z Plane filtering and other 
clever stuff built in. Output sound quality depends on your converters.

I have an old Akai S3000XL that I never use now. Doing everything digitally 
inside the CPU means that pumping stuff through mixers and cables is a 
waste of space.

Sure it's cheap, and I'll probably hang onto till it gets vintage again. 
But for now it's a 2U rack filler, and no more use to me than that.
