Picked up an ESI 2000 for about $150 a year ago, and I must say it's a
pretty amazing box. Definitely have to hunt up a SCSI drive for it, but the
filters sound great, the variety of filter modes is astounding, and the
envelopes (with times ranging from .01 to 60 seconds) are great.
Basically, you have to know which 'decade' to shop for. Fifteen years ago, I
paid $99 for an ARP Odyssey. Now, you can't touch one (in playable
condition) for less than $400. Currently, you can get stuff like TG-33s,
DX-7s, D-50s and early Akai samplers for very little change, so it looks
like mid 80s to early 90s stuff is out of vogue (and therefore very cheap)
right now. Give it another ten years, and this stuff will be 'vintage' and
everyone will want one. ;-)
The moral of the story? Good music requires creativity and imagination. The
Einstein quote in my sig could also say "Imagination is more important than
having the latest, greatest gear." Buy whatever used gear 'decade' is
cheapest and as long as you use it creatively, you can make great music with
just about anything!

BTW, anybody played with the TG33? They look interesting, and a cheap way to
get some wave sequencing, but how do they sound?
