thanks, that was the Frostwave Alienator, which has a PIC doing some simple
digitising with various bit reduction and bit swapping algorithms.
Also an analog filter (based on the MS20 low pass config) whihc can be
pre or post, and a knob to vary the sample rate.
Good for screwing with percussion, among other things.

For DIY, I recommend just makign the analog filter & combining it
with a bargain multifx, I havn't hacked any of those but for all I know
it might be possible to replace the xtal clock with a variable RF
oscillator!!! if anyone has done multifx clock hacking let me know!

A kind listmember sent me a scan of the page but I don't have a
copy of the mag itself.
