A very short delay can be used to change things nicely.  If you can 
break out individual sounds, try it on just the snare drum.

It can be nice to chorus or flange just the hihats, too.

Ring modulation does nifty stuff to drums, too.

Heavy compression or peak limiting can help make things feel a little 
more exciting.  It's a pretty common mixing practise nowadays to do 
this in parallel with the regular drum sound, with a very hefty 
degree of limiting.  Youll hear the drum hit from the direct sound, 
then the compressed signal will come whooshing up behind it.

If you do a little web searching, you should be able to find 
schematics for the Shure LevelLoc, which makes a nice FX limiter.  If 
you skip the I/O transformers, you can probably build one with junk 
box parts.
