FWIW, my wife and I just moved to rural Oregon from downtown Chicago,
and were somewhat stumped as to what to do about broadband. I ended up
getting a 2-way satellite connection from DirecWay/Hughes. No DIY at
all; literally plug-n-play. The installer guy dropped the modem on my
desk, I ran a cable from the router to same, and presto. It's an odd
connection that takes some getting used to, (downstream is fast as a
greased wombat, while upstream is modem-esque) but the cool factor is
quite high, what with a two-way satellite dish sprouting out of my new
digs.
For the record, it doesn't look anything like a Dish Network/Direct TV
dish. It has a much larger and more old-school antenna portion, and is
affixed with three steel struts rather than the single one that the
television folks use. I assume this is because it needs a more stable
platform to transmit with any accuracy.
Nothing important in this letter at all; just thought it was cool. I'm
now about to use my spiffy connection to order components for three of
Ken Stone's modules, just to keep it on topic. (Psycho + Utility LFOs,
and Digital Noise, if you're curious. I'm going to have FPE do
Frac-Rack panels for them. Photos will be on my site as construction
proceeds.)
