combining this thread with the pc synth thread-
i once used a radio crap shack coco (color computer, MC6809) to control a
homemade analog drum machine. a bunch of twin t circuits, a SN76477, a few
hacked up old drum machines that used an EPROM to trigger sounds, outputs to
change patches on these hacked up old drum machines, outputs to turn on/off
FX boxes, a few gate outputs to my homebuilt modular synth, and more. this
thing was a monster. programmed it all in assembler. bent the pins up,
soldered wires to the pins, and glued extra PIA chips on top of each other
and then on top of the stock PIA chip on the circuit board inside the
computer for xtra outputs. i think it had 48 lines of digital out. i really
wish i had taken some pictures 'cause it looked like spaghetti! but it
actually worked quite well and we used it in a bunch of live performances.
was kinda like having a separate person controlling the drum machines and
their FX.

perhaps a bit more than what you were thinking about?

now i use either software (not DIY) or very, very old drum machines through
lots of FX (not DIY).
