[sdiy] Recovery

Tom, If you have been the unfortunate victim of "lightning" more than once,
it is time to start considering the cause. When I see modems included in a
list of damaged items, I always look for grounding problems. Usually, I am
looking for second or unauthorized ground on the phone lines / equipment.
The phone company is famous for grabbing a ground anywhere they can,
including water pipes or whatever. Any and all grounds should be common to
a single point grounding rod at the electrical service entrance in
accordance with local codes. Otherwise you are asking for trouble during
any close in lightning strike even if it only strikes nearby non-electrical
items.
