quick answer:
Because this is not Analogue Heaven!
Ok. When I was in my teens, just starting to listen to electronic
music, I bought a few of Jean Michel Jarre's recordings. As I recall, I
thought that there were awkward balances between inspired music and
cheeziness. I was listening to Equinoxe, Les Chants Magnetique, and The
Concerts in China. Much of it was far too poppy for me. I did enjoy
many bits here and there. Much of my collection from that time took a
walk, but I'd like to hear these again.
On a much sillier note, I saw a JM Jarre special on PBS about three
years ago which was one of the funniest music-related things I have
ever seen. It was fourty or so minutes of highlights from one of his
concerts. It was filmed horribly, with those corny panning stage shots
in dissolved triplicate. (think William Shatner's famous TV rendition
of "Rocketman"...) The audio was continuous pieces of his music, but
the video hardly ever related to the music that was being played! The
video was often punctuated by shots of JM bobbing at his keys, or
holding a few keys down while gesturing flamboyantly with his other
hand, or just striking the odd pose. Outrageously hammy stuff! The
music was ok, but I have heard better live stuff from him. As for the
special, it was more the video editor who made it silly than Jean
Michel.
Anyway, there are many French synthesists and composers whose work is
probably more relevant to me than Jarre. To name a few: La Peste, Guy
Reibel, Francois Bayle, Michel Redolfi, Bernard Parmegiani, CoreTex
Labs, and of course Richard Pinhas / Heldon. Not that I am a
nationalist or anything!
