How about hot melt glue? It would make it easier to remove dead parts.

I have (so far) built filters on PC boards - passive SMD only. I cut a
grid on a small piece of copperboard with a razor blade knife and then
soldered the parts over the gaps. No glue.

I'm also building an RF amp with a SMD. So far, the amp has leads
attached to the leads. I think the part is going to float in the middle
of the RF cavity. It has 3 NC pins that I'm using to support it. One
wire bridges two NC pins and extends to either side of the cavity. The
third will be used to stabilize the part as necessary - an airborne (and
air cooled) part on a tripod stand.
