To be honest, I think I haven't even understood it completely, and even
if I had, I don't think I could answer this question until I had tried

What I was thinking of is a device with just a few knobs, feeding it
by a LFO perhaps and connecting its output to a VCO, twiddling the
knobs and get usable results. The brute force approach, one knob for
each step of the scale is so unintuitive.

Hehe, choosing one from an existing library would require only *one*
knob, labelled "Select"....
