Coming in late...
A lot of simple Macintosh MIDI interfaces got their power by bridge
rectifying the output from the serial port. Since the chips were CMOS and
used practically no current this worked pretty well. The active part of the
circuit was an external clock for the serial port, BTW. The rest was just
standard MIDI glue.
