FWIW, Anatek (I think defunct now) produced a line of
MIDI processing devices that borrowed power from the
MIDI cable.  I have an Anatek pocket-merge and it
doesn't use batteries.

Sadly, the pocket-merge would freeze up on long sysex
messages so I had to stop using it.  Otherwise it
worked well in my setup.
