Ah, but you know how companies think:

These items were already booked to a specific account; the project was 
canned and stuff was written off as loss. So in terms of bookkeeping 
using the DSPs elsewhere would cause *a bigger* loss, because they had 
to tough the precious books...

During my times at AMD Munich there was an incident, when a smaller
distributor went belly-up. This meant that quite some stuff was flowing
back to us (EPROMs, CPLDs etc.) -- which then had to be destroyed,
because they were already written off.

In such situation a good connection to the janitor (he was also
responsible for destruction of parts) truly helps...
