Oh no, that's not right!  There are tremendously exciting advances going on 
right now, in areas such as biotech, nanotech, molecular mechanics, quantum 
transistors, quantum computing, molecular electronics, etc.

Trouble is, these are not readily accessible for hobby work because of 
their incredibly small size, and the hugh expense involved in working on 
them.  This is the real reason for the demise of techDIY -- ultra 
miniaturization and complex fabrication requiring huge, expensive machinery.
