This was never a problem in the UK because Maplin used to sell bare 
keyboards for not all that money.

I never actually bought one, but they weren't hard to find. And there were 
also enough kit synths (which I did buy) to make modding or custom 
redesigns a realistic alternative to trying to do the whole thing from 
scratch yourself.
