Yo,

I would refrain from using shellac on a synth as it is
alcohol-based. And if for some reason any alcohol was
being consumed near the gear ;-) and got spilled,
there goes your finish. 

Me choice would be an oil-based finish like Tung or
Linseed oil. Forms a fairly hard surface one it dries.
Also scratches are easy to fix.
