I'm sure you're right. I can no longer solder even through hole without
taking my glasses off (my eyes turn into low power microscopes when my
glasses are off). And I'm not comfortable doing that (solder/flux
splash). I agree with the Mac Doctor, I will not mess with SMT, I've just
gotten a (very crappy and low paying) job, so any "extra" money that
doesn't go into my gas tank will go to lifetime buys of several through
hole things that are starting to disappear, things I can actually see and
manipulate without a "waldo".
I don't believe that playing with software is the same sort of creative
process as playing with individual transistors to build an analog device.
I believe, as do others here, that the demise of through hole is not a
good thing for creative DIY. When real OTAs, etc. are gone, all we will
have is digital emulations. These emulations are not the same.
