UNMARKED ICs... you could buy a CHIP TESTER from them to find out what they were.
Doubtless they would call every one of them 'good')

Paul is jiving you youngsters here. When HE went to 'high school' the clocks
were mand of glass, and filled with sand.  Silica, Paul... not Silicon. :^P
