Chad and list,
I have nothing to add on the finishing side of this discussion, but I
would suggest an additional step at the outset: use a stripper to remove
the existing finish before you begin sanding. I have used a number of
stripping chemicals and, as a rule of thumb, the nastier chemicals do the
job much quicker, so it is advisable to wear a respirator and ventilation
while using them.
The benefits come in the sanding process, as your paper will no longer
load up with residue from the old finish. Also, you will not need to sand
anywhere near as long, which will allow you to preserve as much of your
wood as possible in the high spots and corners.
Hope this helps,
~Terry
