Here in Maryland, back when full-service was commonplace, it was
customary to tip service station attendants. Of course, back then,
they always checked the oil, water level in the battery, radiator,
transmission fluid, etc., washed the windows and were usually polite.
Do they still do all that out in Oregon, or do they just pump the
gasoline?

When one thinks about it, consumers were once provided with many more
services and conveniences in the past than today (e.g., department
stores had elevator operators, candy counters, plentiful and
knowledgable sales help, and, extra merchandise in stockrooms, etc.);
all at a reasonable cost. Now then, "How has this affected SDIY?" is
the question!

Getting this thread back towards being more on-topic, electronics
stores (and I don't mean those RatShack stores with the logo of
"You've got questions, we've got blank stares.") , which were more
plentiful, even had parts counters where one could just hand the clerk
a list of parts, which he'd retrieve from shelves and bins... no
packaging to drive up costs---well, except for the cardboard boxes for
tubes.
