Just because there's no thru-hole part, it doesn't mean it cannot be
DIYable.
About the mentors - I think this list will still be up and running in 10 or
20 years,
so I'm not affraid about this. What might happen is that we may have to buy
parts and tools in China, because no big industry will need those in the
rest
of the world in a few years.
And I also get a feeling that maybe in 10 years it will require a special
certificate
to legaly replace a light bulb.
One last thought - let's enjoy diy (and especiallyt sdiy) while we can
