I don't have any personal experience with them, but I was just looking at
the Doepfer site today which has some DIY MIDI controller kits.
If you look up "Pocket Electronic" at http://www.doepfer.de/home_e.htm
Anyone tried these?

Roman Sowa (of s-diy) makes a number of PIC Midi boards.
I use one for my Midi Quantized Theremin
There are keyboard encoders and some others. iirc he was working
on a sequencer scanner as well...
Roman has been quiet lately. If he does not de-lurk at mention of his
name, I can try him off-list ;^P
