Yo,

This sure sounds like a religious cult thing. Only the
high priest can impart the proper magic into the
cables. Heathens lack the piety for such work. You
just fork over the cash, er, donation, and the priest
will present you with a proper cable.

For those interested, here are the specs of a
space-time wound cable:
